Smart Bus Stop at Rijeka
Two smart bus stops are available from today to Rijeka's citizens and numerous tourists that offer a range of functionalities for a more efficient and enjoyable experience of city transport. Stops represent the world's technological breakthrough to the affiliated smart cities of the future, and in the background of the whole story is a six-month pilot project of the City of Rijeka in partnership with Ericsson Nikola Tesla, Hrvatski Telekom, Smart RI, Autotrolej and Rijeka promet.
Located on two very frequented locations in Rijeka's city traffic, by Rijeka's skyscraper in Trpimirova Street and Žabica, the stops offer a range of functionalities that citizens and the growing number of tourists need today in public transport. A combination of Ericsson's Connected Traffic Cloud and HT's smart bus stop concept make them unique, which complement each other and together make a completely new service for end users. The stop provides passengers with an overview of the timetable and maps of the bus stations with the current bus positions. The solution is based on the Internet of Things technology, and collects Autotrolej's data and displays a total of 12 Rijeka city traffic cameras on a mobile application. This application enables smart public transport, and for the first time is available on mobile phones in Rijeka, making this solution unique in the world.
Since the stop has also the function of a hotspot, passengers waiting for transport have access to the Internet via Hrvatski Telekom's infrastructure, and thanks to solar panels that supply the stop with energy and to integrated solutions of other partners, it is possible to wirelessly charge smart phones, laptops and other electronic devices for personal use, i.e. gadgets. Sensor set up at smart bus stops measures the temperature and air humidity, providing valuable information on environmental parameters, and in the upcoming phases of the project, additional integration of information on cultural events and promotional offers is expected, as well as solutions for the safety of the passengers themselves.
Anton Jelić presents HT concept "Smart Bus Stop"
"Hrvatski Telekom is the leader in delivering advanced Smart City solutions in Croatia and gathers the widest network of partners to whom it offers ready-to-use "turnkey" concepts. The entire concept of smart bus stop in Rijeka was completely designed by Hrvatski Telekom, and along with the mentioned application, a number of smart solutions of renowned partners has been integrated. With this concept, Hrvatski Telekom and partners set a new standard in modernizing urban infrastructure on the Croatian market." said Saša Kramar, Management Board member of Hrvatski Telekom.
„It is the first such joint pilot project in Rijeka, but it is expected that the cooperation will continue with a wide network of partners, local startups and the University of Rijeka in the three-year project of the Competence Center (CEKOM) for smart cities."
Ericsson Nikola Tesla's experts have adapted the global Ericsson Connected Traffic Cloud application for the first time in the world for use on mobile devices. The original version has already been proven through use in Sweden and the Netherlands, where it has enabled the transformation of urban transport. I am sure that the citizens of Rijeka and numerous tourists thanks to this solution will feel the improvement of the quality of life in the segment of public transport. We are aware that, for significant positive social and economic developments in Croatia, we need, with our own innovation and partnership at all levels, to support efficient public services and more efficient administration. There is a lot of room for creativity and new projects because it is about digital transformation that is happening in all spheres of society ", pointed out Gordana Kovačević, president of Ericsson Nikola Tesla.

By jointly implementing advanced ICT technologies and networked solutions in the transport segment, two large companies once again confirm technological leadership in the service of citizens, and Rijeka becomes the Croatian leader of smart solutions for the city of the future, which is another step closer to the true European capital of culture in 2020.
"For many years, the City of Rijeka has been developing a concept of a smart city, which involves the design of different solutions in order to facilitate everyday life and improve the quality of life of citizens such as free internet, city card or smart traffic lights that regulate the flow of traffic in the city. The concept of Rijeka as a smart city is constantly evolving, so City of Rijeka has recently founded Smart RI as the leader of the Smart Cities Competence Center, which is made up of 20 partners, among others Ericsson Nikola Tesla d.d. and Hrvatski Telekom d.d., with the aim of developing new marketable products such as 4D Intelligent Infrastructure system, energy management and energy efficiency planning, public lighting management system and so on. This project also resulted in cooperation on setting up smart bus stops in Croatia and launching the mobile application presented today, projects that will surely make it easier for citizens of Rijeka to use public transport and managing their time," said Rijeka's Mayor Vojko Obersnel.
